Large-Format Tiles: What to Know Before You Choose Them

Why Large Format Looks So Good

Fewer joints read as more space. A floor laid in 600×600 mm panels — or 900×900 mm, or full slabs up to 1200×2400 mm — gives a calm, monolithic surface that smaller tiles cannot match. It is why hotel lobbies, premium living rooms, and feature walls across Accra increasingly specify it. But the same property that makes large format beautiful makes it demanding: a big rigid panel has nowhere to hide an uneven floor.

The One Thing That Decides Success: The Substrate

Everything that can go wrong with a large-format floor happens beneath the tile, not within it. The porcelain itself is the most stable surface available — classified to EN 14411, group BIa, absorbing ≤0.5% water, so it does not move with Ghana’s humidity. The failures come from two places: voids under the tile, and a substrate that is not flat enough.

Flatness

Large format demands a flat deck — ANSI A108 sets the requirement at roughly ≤3 mm deviation under a 2.4 m straightedge. A dip that a small tile would absorb becomes a lipped edge or a rocking panel under a big one. An uneven slab is levelled before tiling, never tiled over and hoped for.

Full Mortar Coverage

A big panel must be fully supported. We aim for ≥95% mortar coverage by notch-trowelling the floor and back-buttering the tile. Less than that leaves voids — the cause of hollow sounds and cracks.

What This Means for You

QuestionThe honest answer
Will it suit my room?Yes, if the floor is flat or can be levelled.
Can it go over my old floor?Only after a survey confirms or corrects flatness.
Is it more expensive? The tile and the labour both cost more — but done right it lasts decades.
Why must it be quoted on survey? The substrate decides the price, and we cannot price what we have not seen.

Where It Belongs

Large-format porcelain is at its best on living-room floors, halls, and feature walls where the seamless effect rewards the discipline. It pairs naturally with heated floor tile underneath for a warm, near-jointless surface, and slab formats make striking decorative feature walls. The full method is set out under large-format porcelain.

The Standards That Keep a Big Floor Flat

Get the Substrate Right First

Large format rewards a flat, well-prepared floor and punishes a neglected one. The decision to use it is really a decision about your substrate. Tilers Ghana has set large-format porcelain across Accra, Tema, and the rest of Ghana since 1976.
